# A saved word is not a learned word

Canonical: https://wordpin.app/blog/stop-collecting-start-recalling/

A small photo routine that turns a list of new words into something you can actually recall.

You look up the word for a kettle. It makes sense, you save it, and a week later you need to look it up again. The missing step is often an attempt to recall it before seeing the answer.

## Make the picture a question

Take a familiar photo with three objects you want to name. Check the labels once. Then hide them and point to an object: can you say the word? If not, reveal it, say it aloud and try another object. A familiar photo supplies context without supplying the answer.

## Choose three words you will use

You do not need to save every object in a room. Pick three useful words you cannot yet produce. In a kitchen, that might be kettle, cutting board and cabinet. The next time you make breakfast, say a short sentence using one of them.

## Return after a gap

Try the same photo later that day, then on another day. Begin each attempt with the label hidden. When a word is easy, leave a longer gap; when it is difficult, revisit it sooner. WordPin’s photo review offers this kind of picture cue, while your choices determine which words you practise.

## Keep the example personal

“The kettle is next to the sink” links a word to a place you know. Do not memorise a generated sentence if it describes something different from your picture. Make a short sentence you can check.
