# Kitchen vocabulary with a picture: eight useful words

Canonical: https://wordpin.app/learn/kitchen-vocabulary/

Learn eight English words from one kitchen scene, check what each word names, and test yourself with three picture questions.

A kitchen gives you several different kinds of words: a tool, a container, food and the surface they sit on. Start with this supplied scene, then use the same naming routine with your own kitchen.

## Try three picture questions

Look at the picture before opening each answer. The word cards below can help if you get stuck. There is no score: use the answers to check what you meant to name.

1. Which object on the right has a handle and a spout?

Answer: The kettle. It is the large white object beside the fruit bowl.

2. What is directly under the cut lemon?

Answer: The cutting board. The counter is under the board, so these are two different surfaces.

3. What names the container holding the fruit? What names one piece of that fruit?

Answer: Bowl names the container; apple names the fruit. Check whether a photo label names the object itself or its contents.

### bottle

### bowl

### apple

Find it: One of the green pieces of fruit in the bowl.

### plant

### counter

## Name the object you actually mean

The bowl and the apples are both visible. If you want the container, learn bowl; if you want the fruit, learn apple. A photo label can name either, so compare it with your intended object.

The picture alone does not establish the plant variety or what liquid is in the bottle. Use plant and bottle unless you have more context. Do not turn an uncertain guess into a label you repeatedly practise.

This lesson uses cutting board; you may also see [chopping board](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/chopping-board). Here [counter](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/counter) means the kitchen work surface; regional usage also includes worktop. These links are dictionary references; the examples above were written for this picture.

## Use the routine with another picture

- Choose three familiar objects you cannot yet name in your learning language.
- Check the name against the object, then say a short sentence you can verify.
- Hide the name and try recalling it from the picture later.
