# Photo translator or vocabulary app: which do you need?

Canonical: https://wordpin.app/learn/photo-translator-or-vocabulary-app/

Use a photo translator to understand written text; use a picture vocabulary workflow to learn object names, save words and recall them later.

## Start with the task

If you need to understand a menu, a notice or a paragraph right now, choose a tool designed to translate the written text. If you are looking at a room and want to learn what its objects are called, a picture vocabulary app addresses a different task: naming, examples, saving and recall.

A photo can contain both objects and writing. Distinguish the physical thing from the word printed on it. The label on a coffee bag might say “medium roast”; the object you want to name could be a bag, coffee beans or a scoop.

Choose by the result you want

| Your task | Useful workflow | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Read a train notice | Photo text recognition and translation | Does the complete sentence preserve the date, direction and exceptions? |
| Learn the name of a kitchen object | Object label plus a vocabulary card | Does the label point to the right object, and is it the term you need? |
| Remember a new word tomorrow | Save it and test recall with the picture | Can you name it before revealing the answer? |
| Study a long page | Document translation or a reading tool | Can it preserve paragraphs and explain the wider context? |

## An example from the breakfast scene

The WordPin public breakfast example contains a mug, glass, vase and croissant. Translating visible writing would not necessarily tell you these object names. A vocabulary workflow associates each name with the object, then gives you an opportunity to use it.

Compare “a mug” with “a glass.” In this scene, glass means the drinking vessel, not the material. The vase holds the yellow flower. The picture helps you choose the relevant meaning, but you should still check the label and example sentence. See the [breakfast picture and vocabulary table](https://wordpin.app/learn/breakfast-vocabulary/).

## How WordPin fits

WordPin turns a photo into vocabulary labels and word cards. Cards include meanings, pronunciation and examples. Learners can save useful words and review with the photo context. It can also extract vocabulary from visible text or interface elements; that does not make it a replacement for full-document translation.

For your first session, pick three useful objects from a familiar scene. Open their cards, make one sentence about the picture, and then try to name those same objects without the labels. If an object is misidentified, report the problem rather than memorizing the wrong label.

## When to be careful

Do not rely on an AI vocabulary label or a partial translation for medical, legal or safety-critical instructions. Blurred photos, overlapping objects, regional terminology and ambiguous meanings can all affect the result. A clear, ordinary scene with a few recognizable objects makes a better learning exercise.
